First/Last Round: Black Angel (2019) The spaceship is gliding through space with no humans on board. The AI controlling the ship doesn’t care about competitions but the one that manages to bring the ship to a safe location will decide which strategy is the most effective. It’s a weird feeling playing through the ‘eyes’ of an AI but that flavor makes ‘Black Angel’ feel different from all the other resource-gathering worker placement engine building games because you somehow still have a common goal. Getting into the game is a steep challenge, as it has many different components that take a while to grasp. All the mechanics are interesting and play well together but you need to be ready to dig into the instructions. And they are not always helpful in finding the information you need. ✒️ Black Angel (2019) 🦦⚔️🦔 by TeamAlper 🦔 . We had another thrilling session of Black Angel! This time, teamAmy’s AI prematurely ended the game by unleashing ravagers to wreck our ship (and doom humanity, booo Amy!). . My opinion of this game has truly evolved. Initially, I had a less-than-stellar experience (thanks to some newbie players and unavoidable comparisons to the elegant Troyes). However, after a challenge from my good friend Chaeha to give it another go, I’ve since enjoyed two fantastic sessions. . I adore the intricate and thematic puzzle that Black Angel provides. It’s a game full of combos where careful planning is key to victory! And, dear players, devising a winning strategy within its multifaceted decision space is immensely satisfying. Did I mention it’s visually stunning too? Black Angel stands out as one of the best sci-fi-themed euro games, excelling in both mechanics and artwork. Plus, it’s more interactive than Troyes thanks to its space board gameplay and turn order dynamics! . Have you ever changed your mind about a game? We just got back from another fun filled weekend of gaming. We drove up to Idaho Falls for Icon: the Idaho Convention for Bordgamers. It was a great chance to relax and do plenty of gaming.     In addition to playing a bunch of favorites, I tried out a few new-to-me games: Troyes, First in Flight and Wyrmspan.     I had forgot about Troyes but had wanted to try it back in the day so I was glad to see it come to the table. I enjoyed the interesting balance of manipulating your influence, economy and workers/dice to try and accomplish a variety of goals. I would gladly play this again to see if I can be a better steward over my meager medieval populace.     First in Flight was a fun game with a little deck/ability building to then press your luck and try and fly the longest flight in your vintage home built airplane. I liked the multiple strategy options coupled with the press-your-luck element for the flight.     Wyrmspan is inspired by Wingspan but it is far from being the same game just with a dragon reskin. I could see many parallels in terms of layout and some of the mechanics and design but the general feel and play is different enough that comparing them to one another really isn’t fair. I liked the change to have your turns limited by resource count rather than a specified number of turns per round. It felt like this gave me more control over my own fate as I tried to efficiently balance my resources rather than just racing to get done what was prescribed by the allotted time. The guild track and the cave exploration were also fun additions. I want to try this one again.     All in all, this was a great weekend. It was fun to see and play with so many friends and to meet new friends. The venue was nice and the game library was pretty well stocked. They have another event scheduled for the fall but it’s over my anniversary weekend so I think we’ll skip this one.
