This week, @anidifranco is my guest on That’s How I Remember It. Ani is a true force of independent music and she’s done and influenced so much: over 20 studio albums, her own record label, a memoir, etc. Plus, she just finished a run performing on Broadway in the musical Hadestown. We talked about all of this as well as her new album “Unprecedented Shit”, working with producer BJ Burton, being proud to call herself a folk singer, auditioning horn players on 9/11, and a show The Hold Steady played with her and Dr. John. Huge thanks to Ani for being a part of it, was an honor to have her. Listen and subscribe! Link in bio.

I was honored to be deputized by Lt. Dangle after the THS show at Summerfest on Saturday night. Other highlights were some excellent custom inside baseball THS items: a Panama Jack hat with the flaps on the back (Hostile, Mass.) and three jukebox themed shirts (Certain Songs). This attention to detail warms my heart. Cancelled flight led to a Milwaukee bonus round, which included a Brewers game and a Pfister Bloody Mary. Thanks to all the people who came out to see us in Chicago and Milwaukee this weekend, it was truly a blast.

Tickets on sale 10 AM LOCAL TIME! Get them at the link in bio! --- I’m thrilled to announce that I will be doing two solo tours this fall: Europe & the UK in September, followed by a run of dates in the USA in November. This is an extension of the This is What It Looks Like tour I did earlier this year. I loved that tour so much I wanted to keep it going, update the show, and bring it to some new places. The shows will feature songs from my solo catalog as well as the stories behind them. I’ll also be debuting some new songs that I’m very excited to share. One of my favorite songwriters, Kathleen Edwards, will be joining the September UK and Euro dates as a special guest. This is super exciting to me. I’m a huge fan of Kathleen’s records. During the tour we will visit the Nashville Nights festival in Odense, Denmark, my third time at this great festival. Kathleen and I will play together at this one, in a songwriter’s round. Also at Nashville Nights, I’ll be recording a live version of my podcast That’s How I Remember It, with Kathleen as my guest. The US dates in November hit some places I haven’t been in a while, and I’m really looking forward to bringing these special shows stateside.

UPDATE: Apologies to everyone, as there were a few technical glitches with ticketing on some of the shows. These have been corrected and all pre-sale ticketing links are working. Password: STORIES The presale runs through the end of the day Thursday, June 27, so there is still plenty of opportunity to order tickets before the general on-sale begins Friday. Please Note: there are different ticket vendors across the tour dates, so the process to order and the place for the presale code might be in a different location depending on the ticketing service. — I’m thrilled to announce that I will be doing two solo tours this fall: Europe & the UK in September, followed by a run of dates in the USA in November. Arab Strap (@arabstrapband ) (Aidan Moffat & Malcolm Middleton) are my guests on today’s episode of That’s How I Remember It. I’ve been a huge fan of theirs since hearing the single “The First Big Weekend” in the mid 90s, was thrilled to have them here. We talked about their great new LP "I’m Totally Fine With It Don’t Give A Fuck Anymore” and also about NYC restaurant Sammy’s Romanian, moving away from autobiographical songwriting, “Jolly Roger” by Adam & The Ants, and the word “stotious”, which was new to me. A fantastic talk, major thanks to Arab Strap for joining me. Listen and subscribe! Link in bio.

My guest today is Sam Beam, who writes and records music as Iron & Wine (@ironandwinetour ). Sam is an incredibly beautiful and vivid songwriter who created one of my absolute all time favorite songs “Walking Far From Home”. He has also just released a great new album called “Light Verse”, and it is likely his funniest record, which I love. We talked about all this and also: a THS/Iron & Wine show at NYU in about 2005, college shows, The Rescuers, Davey Crockett, wisdom vs. experience, and the value of art being in the creation more than the reception. I loved speaking to Sam about all of this, he’s truly a fascinating artist. Huge thanks to him for joining me. Listen and subscribe at link in bio!

Matthew Houck from @phosphorescentmusic is my guest on this episode of That’s How I Remember It. I’ve loved Matthew’s music for years and was excited to talk to him about his great new record Revelator, what he learns from covering other artist’s songs, whether geographic moves affect his music, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, moon phases, and his most well known song "Song for Zula". Matthew was a fantastic guest, and I very much enjoyed our talk. Listen and subscribe. Link in bio.

We are back with a new episode of That’s How I Remember It, and we celebrate by hosting excellent guest Eric Burton (@ericburtonmusic ) of The Black Pumas (@blackpumas ) . The Black Pumas formed in 2018 and their rise can only be called meteoric. The band went from a bar residency to Grammy nominations and world wide touring. We talked about this, skateboarding to Albert King, external meanings being attached to the BP song “Colors”, the first meeting with his bandmate Adrian Quesada, meditating before shows, and being present and grateful in the music itself. A great talk, huge thanks to Eric for joining me. We’ll be rolling out new THIRI episodes every other week going forward and we have some great ones in the can. Listen and Subscribe! Today we are sharing the live episode of That’s How I Remember It recorded on March 2, 2024 at the @mothclub in London. My esteemed guests were @matdosman and @scottlavene . I was just wrapping up a solo tour with Scott as support act, and we talked about his upcoming record and his excellent memory for what he had for breakfast each day of our tour. Next in the chair was the amazing Mat Osman, who is bassist and founding member of the band Suede as well as an author of several books. We spoke about his most recent excellent novel The Ghost Theater, milestones from the early days of Suede, his love of London, and so much more. It was beautiful afternoon at The Moth Club, and great to relive here. Starting next week we will be posting new episodes of THIRI, and it will continue on every other week schedule going forward.
