📝 There is no better way to wind down before, during or after a long day than to sit down with a steaming cup of tea. Black tea specifically. With a splash of milk and some sugar, if possible. Or green tea with some honey? Or lemon? Depends on the mood I'm in, really...
... All this to say that if you feel like opening up your own tea shop, you better be able to cater to everyone's specific tea preferences, lest the competition steals your valued customers. That's what Chai is all about! ☕
The basis of the game is to buy ingredients to make tea to sell to customers, and every step along the way has its own mechanics.
For the first step, there are two types of ingredients: Pantry-ingredients, of which you get to choose three from a pool of five randomly drawn ones, and market-ingredients which you need to go out and buy. Before buying them you get a budget of three coins, but you don't need to spend them all if you want to save up instead. There's a separate board representing the market, and if any of the same ingredients line up, you can grab them all for the price of one.
Once collected, you can use your ingredients to serve your customers their preferred blend of tea. When served, you earn the points associated to the customer's order. Naturally, more complicated or expensive blends yield more points.
Every aspect (minus, perhaps, bookkeeping and health inspection) of running a tea shop is represented in an intuitive way as explained above. The different customers are well illustrated and the included teacups and market-ingredient tiles are lovely. The rules are rather easy to learn which makes Chai a very light boardgame.

Hace unos años, cuando elegíamos un juego nuevo, nos fijábamos en la temática, en lo novedosas o no que fueran las mecánicas y, porqué no, en el precio.
Hoy por hoy, con la cantidad de títulos que salen al mercado todos los años, la estética y los componentes se han sumado a la lista de factores a la hora de elegir un juego. Porque sabemos que, aunque el juego sea el mismo, la experiencia se vuelve mucho más sofisticada e inmersiva si los componentes le dan ese toque final.
Y a esto le llamamos deluxificar. Es decir, cuando a un juego le elevamos la calidad, los materiales o la terminación de los diferentes componentes.
Hoy, iniciando esta nueva serie de posts sobre deluxificaciones, os queremos hablar de LAS MONEDAS 🪙
Muchos son los juegos donde las monedas están muy presentes. Bien como medio para comprar materiales, mejoras, construcciones… o bien porque directamente el dinero es el objetivo del juego por el que mediremos la victoria. Por eso, es un elemento que en cuanto se deluxifica un poco, se nota mucho durante las partidas.
¿Qué podemos deluxificar en las monedas?
- El material: las monedas estándar suelen ser de cartón, una versión un poco mejorada sería de plástico o resina pero el material más codiciado en este caso es el metal
- El peso: normalmente, cuanto más pesadas mejor sensación de juego y más valoradas
- El diseño: cuanto más personalizado y a detalle sean, más calidad percibiremos. También es un plus que tengan diferente diseño por cada cara.
- La forma: las monedas por definición son redondas, pero… ¿Qué pasa si las hacemos con relieve, pentagonales o con marcas de desgaste?
- Color: que sean de más de un color, que cambie el color según el valor y/o que tengan sombras si tienen elementos grabados, por ejemplo.
- La variedad: si tenemos más de un valor y el tamaño, los diseños y los colores varían según ese valor.

I had a great time at #PAXUnplugged 🎲
I planned this with some of my non-online friends, so I didn’t make any big announcement about it here. But I still got to meet a couple of Twitch folks -I’ll definitely be more comfortable meeting more of you all next year 💙

🇬🇧 One of our latest additions is Chai. It never really caught our attention, to be honest. A few months back, we played Chai at our local board game cafe and it was quite fun, but we weren't blown away. ☕️
During the Dutch fair Spellenspektakel, we saw a copy at the second-hand stand for a very (!) good price. And also the Deluxe version with nice cups, metal coins and extra components. 🫖 We didn't have to doubt about it. It might not be the very best game as rounds go by very quickly, but it’s a nice lightweight family game for a soft price! 💜
🇳🇱 Eén van onze nieuwe aanwinsten is Chai. Het heeft eigenlijk nooit zo onze aandacht getrokken. Een paar maanden terug speelden we Chai bij onze lokale bordspellencafé en dat was best leuk, maar we waren niet per se verkocht. ☕️
Tijdens Spellenspektakel zagen we ‘m staan bij de tweedehandsstand voor een héél goed prijsje. En ook nog eens de Deluxe versie met mooie cups, metalen munten en extra materiaal. 🫖 Daar hoefden we niet over te twijfelen! Niet het allerbeste spel want de rondes gaan wel erg snel voorbij, maar wel lekker luchtig dus perfect voor de familie! 💜 En een mega zacht prijsje!
