We brought a classic to the table! We both love deckbuilders and Thunderstone is arguably the best.
You have four options each turn: fight a monster, buy a card, cull a card or put cards on top of your deck to prepare for the next turn.
Each game has four heroes you can purchase. The level one hero on top of the deck may not be super powerful, but if you level him up a couple times he’ll be a monster-smashing powerhouse.
You can also buy items, weapons and helpful contacts in town to build out your deck. Weapons all have a weight and must be attached to a hero. If your warriors aren’t strong enough, your hard-earned hardware goes to waste.
And what happens if you adjust the box just a touch too much trying to get the perfect background for the enemies in the dungeon? Well, it falls to the floor and you get to spend the next 30 minutes reorganizing the cards 😅

I was excited to stumble across this biography this morning. Veeck was one of baseball’s biggest innovators and it’s a great way to kick off the season.
We’ve had a blast playing Memoir ‘44 for our upcoming WWII-themed podcast. We’re breaking down the board game and the show Band of Brothers.
Memoir ‘44 recreates 16 battles from the European campaign. One side plays the Axis and the other is the Allies. On your turn you play a card indicating which units you can activate. Then you move those units and roll combat dice.
You win by either eliminating a set number of enemy units or accomplishing objectives on the map. It can be visually overwhelming to start, but the core gameplay loop is easy to grasp.
The photos are from Operation Luttich. Check out our full thoughts when this episode of Outside is Overrated drops April 1.

Every Wednesday night after the kiddos go down is board game night. This week we played Creature Comforts.
This accessible worker placement game has you gathering resources, buying comforts and improving your burrough for winter. Each turn you commit four workers to locations and allocate six dice. After eight turns you count your victory points to find Phoenix Sedlacek’s margin of victory.
If you haven’t played a worker placement game before, this is a great entry point! It is super cute and has a forgiving dice manipulation mechanic.
Which board game has your favorite cutesy art design? Some contenders include this gem, Everdell and Flamecraft.

The Song of Spider-Man ensnared me. I had no idea there was a Spidey musical on Broadway. This book follows the troubled production from one of the show’s co-writers.
It’s an inside look at how Briadway works and the challenges that plague grand ambitions. I recommend it to anyone who loves Spider-Man and has an interest in the entertainment industry.

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion. In this scenario we fought waves of stone golems and cultists.
It was a long scenario. We failed it twice because I kept burning cards to do massive attacks. This forced me to retire early and my companions didn’t have the firepower to win without me.
I love the balance in Gloomhaven. I start with 10 cards, and my best attacks are one-time uses. When I slowed my roll and used more conservative attacks we finally beat it.
Do you prefer dice or card-based combat mechanics?
