Ok boardgame community, we need to talk. Why was my first game of Twilight Imperium such a bad experience? Let me try to put my impressions together. And no, normally I am not starting off with the negative points, but I need to get this off my chest now.
The biggest problem that got stuck in my head was the tremendous amount of text. Text. Just text everywhere. On the strategy cards, on the technology cards, on the contracts, and so on. Before you can do something you need to read first. You want to attack someone? You need to read first. You might say now, that's because I am new to the game, but isn't it just really bad game design if barely no symbol is used that you can easily recognize from the other side of the table?
The next thing might be a bit exaggerated, but I was surprised that such an epic game comes with the same ship miniatures for all factions. That was really a downer and negatively affected the immersion for me.
I already mentioned the amount of text in the game, but this is, unfortunately, also paired with a high number of cards throughout the game making the situation even worse. For me it turned out to be very fiddly organizing my planets for resources or researched technologies. The longer the game lasts, the more the table is covered with cards (of course with text).
Let's talk about the combats next. To me they felt very shallow due their shortness. It was not these epic battles that I expected from the game. Moreover, due to the low number of dice throws, randomness can hit you really hard here and your entire fleet is gone in the blink of an eye.
And there is even more randomness in the contract cards, which are one of the core elements of the game. While you can get contracts, which are nearly impossible to resolve, other players just discard 5 action cards for example and gain a victory point. Seriously?
